A couple of years ago a friend of mine introduced me to a book called Microworlds by Margherita Dessany. It is a wonderful book filled with whimsical images of tiny people photographed in the world at large. The juxtaposition delighted me, and for a long time, I've wanted to play with the idea myself, just for fun. That's what I'm doing here. But, before I do, please check out some of the artists who have inspired me below.

Margherita Dessany

There are probably many more artists, but these are the ones I know about. If you have some favourites, please leave me a comment, and I'll be happy to add them to the list.

The inspiration of this collection of mine will be drawn from the everyday happenings in my own life -- the ordinary things we do as we live and learn. I want to bring some fun to them. A lightness. Some humour. And maybe even a little magic. I hope you enjoy my world!

Diving

You can probably imagine how delighted I was to discover that the teeny people who had been visiting me at home in Ithaca, New York seem to have followed me here to Palo Alto, California.  That's no small journey, I'll tell you!  I laughed out loud this afternoon as I sat with a cool, refreshing drink, thinking about gregarious and humble examples of people to draw, and then incidentally caught sight of this little fellow hovering still among the bubbles.  It was clever of him to attempt to camouflage his bubble sounds in a bubble drink, but his red divers suit stood out against that green lime, catching my eye.  He waved one time before he made his final tour of the glass, pulled himself atop an ice cube, and then effortlessly hopped over the rim, dropping with amphibian dexterity to the table below.  I told him I didn't mind if he wanted to stay and dive some more.  He said due to having been spotted, the thrill was gone...for now.

Paddling

It true that it's been a long cold winter here in Upstate New York, but I still did a double-take when I returned to enjoy my coffee by the light of the window and found this couple paddling as though they didn't have a worry in the world.  I admit I admired their care-free nature, but I was eager to sip that coffee before it got cold, so I asked them to move on to another location.  They didn't seem bothered by my request.  I thought of helping them move to the cat's water bowl, but that might not be warm enough for what they have in mind, so I left them to figure it out for themselves.

Mooning

Okay. This is getting to be quite enough! All week long I've been driving around getting strange looks from people. Some laughed, but most seemed to be offended by the very presence of my car. I was starting to get pretty irritated, not being one to welcome unsolicited attention. Yesterday I actually gave one guy the finger. Today, I was unpacking my groceries from the trunk of the car. My husband accidentally hit the break pedal when he was getting out of the driver's side, drawing my attention upward toward the light where I find these bozos standing there mooning me! Now I feel bad about giving that guy the finger.

Spying on a Spy

I've heard it said that it was possible for someone to hack into a computer to spy on a person through their webcam.  I've never given that much thought...until today.  While I was watching my son play a game on his computer, and I had this feeling like I was being watched.  I couldn't shake it.  The hairs on the back of my neck were standing up.  Cold chills ran through my body.  Slowly, I looked over at his webcam.  Not only was someone watching us, they were taking pictures of us!  Creepy.  I took a picture of him before he made his escape.  I'll be reporting this for sure.

Winter Sports

It ain't easy skating on stale ice cubes.  Kudos to these two for even trying!

Stuck Steaming

The boy was steaming.  Seriously?  What was his dad thinking taking this detour?  It didn't even make sense.  It was hardly even a detour.  It was more like sight seeing.  Now they were stuck having to try to carry all the boxes of fruit back before they spoiled.  It seemed like an impossible task.  With every step Randy took, he sunk deeper and deeper into this...whatever this was they had driven across.  His dad -- the know-it-all -- told him to hold his basket a little higher and a little more out front of himself to distribute his weight a bit.  "Like a polar bear on ice," he said. Sure. Sure.  Like a polar bear on ice.  Good grief!
